Transitioning Outfits From Summer to Fall
The heat of autumn is different from the heat of summer. One ripens apples, the other turns them to cider
— Jane Hirshfield

It’s that time of year where half of the population is jumping for joy and eagerly awaiting the first cool front to come through so they can wear as many “cozies” as possible and the other half is silently crying, not wanting summer and all its glory to end quite yet.

Regardless of where you stand, fall is technically here… even if the weather doesn’t say so. (I’m looking at you warm weather states)

Here are a few ideas and ways to transition into fall, that will apply to anyone. I love maximizing the wardrobe and figuring out a way to utilize what’s in it or finding the “missing” piece so that opens up even more options. So, before you completely switch over to your fall/winter wardrobe (do people still do that??), here’s a few ideas. They’ve been around for years but sometimes its nice to have a refresh.

  1. Bathing suits.
Keep a one piece out and use it as a bodysuit.

  2. Boots.
Booties, tall boots, over the knee boots, combat boots… you name it. They are perfect to wear with shorts, dresses, jeans, and skirts that add the perfect fall flare.

  3. Hats.
Felt wide brim hats are my absolute favorite. And yes, they are suitable for all year round, however, there is something about them that can drastically elevate ANY look and can change an outfit’s feel.

  4. Sweaters.
I know, it’s a no brainer but still had to include it. Pairing a sweater with jeans on cool days is a no brainer but on days that it’s still warm out I love wearing a lighter weight one with shorts, over a dress or with a skirt.

  5. Over pieces.
Cardigans, blazers, shawls, ponchos, denim jackets, etc. Pair them with most anything in your closet: jeans, shorts, dresses, skirts… During warmer days grab a light weight option, styling it with short sleeves, tanks, etc. and during cooler days layer up with long sleeves or a sweater.

  6. Flannels.
Flannels and button ups scream fall to me. Again, pieces that can be worn year round (bathing suit coverup) but I love how this time of year you start to see them everywhere, especially plaid.

  7. COLORS of the season.
Neutral colors are a given and I’m sure some of your “summer” and basic wardrobe consist of neutrals, but it’s also fun to see what the year’s color pallet is and adding in those fun pops of color.

Happy fall, friends!

Alison
