Family Pictures + Outfit Planning
Family, where life begins and love never ends.

My thought process behind choosing our outfits for family photos:

  1. Dressy or casual?
Will one or the other work better for the location that the photos will be taken at?

  2. Pick 1 piece to be your starting point.
It doesn’t need to be your “statement” or main piece, but you need a starting point to base and build the rest of the outfits on. For me, it was a bride’s maids dress I had bought and never got to wear (2020 brides, my heart goes out to you!) - I thought it would be a perfect opportunity for it to not go to “waste” just sitting in my closet.

  3. Choose your color pallet.
You can always pick your color palette before choosing your starting point piece. I usually do whatever I have a stronger vision for at the time and then go from there.

  4. Mix solids, patterns, and textures.
With it being the winter, I knew I wanted to go heavy with the textures, and I wanted Berkeley to be in the pattern - tying in with my dress and Michael’s pants.

  5. Get a visual.
I made collages on my phone. I pieced together each outfit individually first (I.E., My dress, shoes, and jacket). Then I did a few different versions, swapping shoes, jackets, tops, etc., keeping in mind the whole color scheme and vision I had in my head until I was happy with the combo. Finally, after I was happy with each person’s outfit, I put them all together in the same collage to make sure that they still flowed nicely.

If you are clueless as to what you even want, there are tons of inspiration on Pinterest for family photo outfits! I started a “family photo outfit” board over on my Minted Mod Pinterest. I’ll keep adding to it as I come across looks I love.
